Seattle and Sendai, two major coastal cities in U.S. and Japan, respectively, dominate the economy of their local regions, and are home to major research universities: University of Washington (UW) and Tohoku University (TU). As the gateway to Pacific trade in the U.S. and home to important U.S. based high-tech industries, such as Boeing, Microsoft, Amazon, Google, as well as Japan based industries, such as Toray Composites America and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries America, the Puget Sound area is an ideal location to establish a space to promote educational and research connections between Japan and the U.S.
The goals of UW-TU:AOS are to foster and expandg educational and research opportunities for students and faculty at both universities, as well as develop a cooperative infrastructure to enable productive partnerships and exchanges. Participants from both institutions meet regularly- remotely and in person- to plan and implement the academic research work through the AOS. These include regular research seminar, new distance-learning courses for students and researchers, training in advanced techniques for researchers, programs for cross-cultural awareness and opportunities to meet with research collaborators and industry partners.
